30 Aug. 2024 / EU-GreW Summer School : Activation of educators to support the Green Deal Agenda – A Vision for the Future

EEPEK, the biggest educational association in Greece, is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the first year of project EU-GREW (“EU - The Green Wave: A Jean Monnet Action inspired by Claude Monet”, ERASMUS-JMO-2023-OFET-TT, Project number: 101127503).  EU-GREW first year activities, centered around the organization and implementation of a two-week Summer School dedicated to educating school teachers from across Europe and neighboring countries on the pressing issues of climate change and the European Union's "Green Deal." The program, held from 18th to 30th August 2024, brought together more than 70 educators from 35 countries, uniting them in a shared mission to integrate environmental awareness and sustainable practices into their curricula.

This unique educational initiative is now provided through a dynamic platform (https://seminars.eepek.gr - moodle platform) for teachers to deepen their understanding of climate change, explore Green Deal policies and goals and learn how to inspire their students to contribute to a sustainable future. The platform is expected to be enriched with activities by the participants.

Empowering Educators to Drive Change: The European Green Deal, which aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, includes key initiatives on energy transition, biodiversity protection, sustainable food systems, and pollution reduction.

Τhe EU-GREW Summer School played a critical role in advancing these goals by equipping educators with the knowledge to inspire climate education and action in classrooms across Europe and beyond. By fostering a deep understanding of climate policies and solutions, the program ensures that participants are prepared to introduce their students to concepts that will help them address the environmental challenges of the future. Educators are expected to lead significant climate education initiatives in their respective countries, helping students become informed, active citizens.

Summer School Highlights:

  • Comprehensive Training on Climate Science and the Green Deal: Teachers were given an in-depth overview of the causes and consequences of climate change, along with a thorough understanding of the European Green Deal, the EU’s strategic plan for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
  • Interactive Workshops: Hands-on sessions encouraged teachers to develop innovative lesson plans, explore climate change-related case studies, and engage in critical discussions on topics such as renewable energy, circular economies, and sustainable development.
  • Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Participants from across Europe, as well as neighboring countries, exchanged best practices and shared experiences from their respective educational systems, enhancing the collaborative spirit of the event and fostering international cooperation on climate education.

"EEPEK is thrilled with the success of this Summer School. By equipping teachers with the tools to educate the next generation about climate change and sustainability, we are fostering a ripple effect of positive environmental change.  Following the success of this year’s Summer School, we are already planning future editions, with plans to include more educators and broaden the focus to cover additional areas of sustainability and climate resilience. The program has been praised as a model for international collaboration in climate education, and EEPEK is committed to expanding this important work." said Dimitrios Kolokotronis, EEPEK Chairman of the Board.
